Matt Metz- Champ Flight Winner
The Charleston division of THE EGolf AMATEUR TOUR held their first event of the 2008 season on Saturday, February 2 at the Wild Dunes Golf & Tennis Resort located on the Isle of Palms, SC. Wild Dunes Resort was named the Best in State Resort by Golf Digest in 1997. The Harbor Course, which winds along the Inter-costal Waterway proved to be a real test for the players who still had some rust in their game. The Tom Fazio design has lots of water and some very long par 4s. The course staffs were excellent host for this event and everything ran very smooth. The weather was beautiful with cool temperatures and moderate winds. The rain held off for a great day of golf. The pace of play was a little erratic and some gaps developed late in the tournament. This will get better as the new players are acclimated to the tour.
Matt Metz of Summerville won the Championship Flight with a score of 77. Scott Mowrey of Charleston scored a 78 for second, with Arnie Reddick of Rincon, GA right behind with a 79 for third. Howard Tomlinson of Savannah, GA took the Championship Senior Flight Honors with a score of 80.
Deron Lewis of Mt. Pleasant shot an 80 to take “A†Flight honors in a playoff over John Shores of Charleston. Lenin Lezcano of Hilton Head was right behind with an 81 for third place.
Michael Reardon of Charleston shot an 87 to take “B†Flight over Tim Sumption of Summerville who carded an 89. New player to the tour Jim Heskind of Charlotte, NC finished in third with a 93.
Jason Brisini of Hannahan, SC captured the “C†Flight with an 86 over Rick Miller of Charleston who shot 95. Hal Wynne of Charleston finished right behind Rick with a 96. Jason has been playing well to start the season. He got rid of his rust early in the year at Hilton Head events.
Michael Miller of Summerville scored a 95 to win the “D†Flight. Tommy Bryant of Mt. Pleasant took second in a scorecard playoff over Dean Teal of Charleston. Both players carded 98’s.
The next tour stop for the Charleston Tour will be on Kiawah Island’s Turtle Point course on Saturday, February 23. This is a very nice course and should be a great tournament event. We would like to encourage everyone to come out, join the tour, and enjoy playing competitive tournament golf.
