Lake Marion Winners, Kauble, Wanner, Sherry, Metzger and Johnson
The Charleston tour ventured up the highway to our annual
Santee Shindig and we played Lake Marion Golf Course. The weather was nice and
the course was in great shape and the greens were rolling quick and true. Although there were some difficult holes experienced
by all, the scores were indicative of how well we played as a group.
The Champ, A and B flight all played from the tips. In the Champ Flight, Stephen Kauble continued
his strong play of late with an even 36 on the front and then a four over back
nine for smooth round of 76 to outdistance Marty Bunch who posted a solid round
of 78. In the A flight Andy Balao and
Dan Wanner both posted rounds of 78 to force a “on the course” playoff. Dan made a nice two putt birdie to take home
top honors. Coming in third one stroke
back was Glenn Powell. In the B flight,
Paul Sherry ventured up from Hilton Head to play a very nice round of
golf. Paul fired an 81 for a one shot
victory over Matt Root who birdied eighteen to take sole second place. Coming
in third place one shot behind Matt was Tim Sumption. In the C flight Sean Metzger used his length
to overpower the field for a six shot victory.
Lyn Rhode came in second with a very nice 88 one shot in front of Eddie
Haynes from Charlotte. The D flight had
probably our happiest victor of the year as Julie Johnson won her first ever
Golfweek Amateur tour event! Julie
played a nice round of 90 for a two-shot victory over Aaron Chase. All in all it was a good tournament. We had a little controversy but with new
rules being implemented at our future events, that won’t happen again. More to follow. Up on the schedule next is our Southern Regional
being held at Kiawah Island at Osprey and the Ocean Course. Our next local event will be in the same area
as we play Seabrook’s Ocean Winds.
