After Rain spoiled the season opener on Feb 1, the Charleston Golfweek Amateur Tour tried it again on Feb 8th. The weatherman had a gloomy forecast all week long but alas on the day of the event the golf heavens smiled upon us and produced a sunny afternoon after a sketchy morning.
The tour kicked off their local season on beautiful Kiawah Island at the Tom Fazio designed Osprey Point. The Championship flight showed that this year is going to be a competitive bracket as Jeff Emory and Jason Ray fought the winds with identical scores of 79. The two took to hole number one for a sudden death playoff where Jason prevailed over last seasons champ for his first victory on the tour.
The A flight saw some spectacular play from Both Travis Hoffman and Jace Gause. Jace posted an 80 with some solid putting Travis playing in the last group not only edged Jace out on the closest to the pin for the A flight, he outdid him by one shot, firing a 79 with a triple bogie on his card with no birdies; that makes for a lot of pars folks!
The B flight saw the round of the day posted by Mason Talley who fired a 77 in the first group out. I mention the first group because they are the ones who had to deal with the lingering rains and morning cold. Coming in a distant second albeit with a solid round of his own was tour veteran James Ravenel who posted a solid 82 one shot better than both John Beckman from Columbia and Joe Turner who both carded 83's.
The C flight saw Sean Metzger and Jason Courtney battle it out all day. Sean was one shot down standing on the 18th tee box. Each golfer new what he had to do to secure the victory. Jason struggled and Sean seized the opportunity for a one shot victory, 86 to 87.
The D flight saw some very nice play as well. Fred Bernhart lapped the filed by posting an 82 while Jimmy Bryson's 86 edged out Luis Dejesus by a shot. It was a great way to kick off the new year.
Our next tournament is next Sat at the Wild Dunes Harbor course on the Isle of Palms. Sign up on line or just shoot Tim and email.
