The Charleston Golf Week Amateur Tour braved the conditions on Sunday at The Harbor Course @ Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms. The course held up well during the day as the group experienced three torrential downpours. The day started with the shotgun start and with the recommendations from the Head pro all the groups played from the white tees while the ladies went off the gold. Through all the tough conditions there was some spectacular golf played.
George King proved that practice can pay off as he fired a 3 over 73 with a round that included three birdies. Playing in the same group was Dan Wanner who also played very well shooting a 4 over 74 with 4 birdies. Coming in third was newcomer Tariqah Walikraam who played beautifully in her first Charleston event by firing a 77 with thee birdies as well.
The B flight also saw some spectacular play as Casey Collier shot a 78. This was incredible as he played hole 18 in the pouring rain, hitting the green in two and then using his hybrid to putt through the water, two putted for a 4 and the win. James Ravenel blistered the course with a 78 hitting a tournament high 10 fairways and ten greens. This is James second consecutive second place finish and he shows no signs of letting up.
The C flight had five competitors and Max proved mightiest of them all shooting a smooth 90 that included two birdies while Brad Morris placed second in his first event in the C flight.
D flight had a first time winner as Steve Hartoin enjoyed the rain by posting a very solid 91 while tour veteran Dennis Harris finished second with a solid 93.
All in all I owe everyone a thank you for their patience and diligence for helping me get this tournament in.
Our next event is going to be at one of the Low Country's best kept secrets, Penny Branch Golf Club. This course is an exciting trac and their greens are always rated among the top greens in South Carolina. Sing up early as this is a combo event with Hilton Head.
