Winter Classic Lives up to its name once again:
The Charleston Tour ventured on out to the Isle of Palms to
open the season at the Harbor Course at Wild Dunes. It is a nice tradition of starting the year
off there but one tradition we have to change is the Weather!! The weather impacted us like never before and
we actually had to move the event from Sat to Sunday, throw in a frost delay
and we still almost got the entire event in.
The was excitement all over the scoreboard and drama as we had to reduce
three flights to a 17 hole event.
Overall it was still a great way to kick off the season and it was great
to see all the smiling faces!!
The Championship flight with a reduced field had a
tremendous battle all day long as Chris Asbel and Mike Cobb gave a forcast of
things to come this year. Chris’ steady
play on the tough closing holes proved the difference tho in a 3 shot victory
to secure his first win of the new year.
The A flight had more drama then what is called for. Glenn Powell and Dustin Mcgrath seemed to go
neck and neck all day long. Darkness was
definitely a factor in this one as Glenn Powell tried to finish 17 only to make
his only double of the day. The two
finished tied and with no way to do an on-the-course playoff Dustin won via a
scorecard playoff. Beth Hunt, last years
Champ rounded out the top three with a very nice 78.
The B flight had some strong play as Corey Coursey from
Augusta fired a smooth 80 for a two shot victory over Jason Courtney. Jason had edged out Wes Fleming 82-83.
The C flight had some extreme drama as Sam Marano and Tim
Parrish had both fired rounds of 89 to finish tied for first in the club
house. The problem being Sean Metzger
was four shots up after 160 holes. The
lead shrank to one as Sean played the 17th hole in three over but
with darkness fading, he was unable to finish 18. The left him with a one-shot victory.
The D flight saw some very nice play and an eagle by Mike
Miller on Hole 15!! That Eagle helped Mike to a very solid 95 to finish just
off the lead as Cleve Johnson posted a great round of 92 to take the first
victory of the year.
Our next local event is Rivertowne on Feb 26th. This sells out every year please sign up
soon. If you haven’t registered for any
regional events please do so soon as they are all filling up.
