Lake Marion Golf Club in Santee, SC played host to the latest tournament for the Hilton Head-Savannah tour and the Charleston Tour. With the temperature over 100* and the heat index topping out at 115* it made for an extremely hot day on the golf course. Even with the heat the 33 golfers that played today made good time moving around the course with every group finishing in under 5 hours. Along with good pace of play, the scores that were shot today were very impressive.
The Championship flight saw two players battle it out on the course; Chris Burnett from the Hilton Head-Savannah tour and newcomer Billy Hill from the Charleston Tour. Chris is one of the more consistent players we have on tour so we knew that it would be a good test for Billy in his first tournament. Billy was up to the test. Chris carded an impressive 75 on the day only to be handed second place points. Billy used 5 birdies on his way to a 2-under par 70 to take home the top spot. Billy also won a flight skin and a super skin on the day. Not too bad for his first tournament. Congrats Billy Jo Hill on your first victory.
The A flight was the biggest flight today with 11 golfers playing . Keeping with the theme of low scores Eric Tobias used 5 birdies to help post a very secure 76 on the day to take home the top honors. Eric also won a flight skin and a super skin today. Coming in tied for second was Mark Ducker and Tony Capehart with 78’s on their scorecards. Mark secures second place with a scorecard playoff. Mark also won the closest to the pin for the championship and A flight while Tony took home a flight skin.
The B flight saw 6 players take to the course. With only 3 strokes separating first place from fourth place it was a very competitive group. In the end James Ravenel used steady play and a grinders approach to secure an 85 on the scorecard to take home first place. Coming in second was Tim Sumption (86), followed by Pat Helm (87) and Denny Miller (88). Tim won the closest to the pin for the B flight while Denny and Devan Lawrence secured the only two skins for their group (both also won a super skin).
The story of the day came from the C flight. A total of 9 players set out to bring home some very important season long points as the races are heating up on both tours for the C flight championship. Points and the 3 birdies that won skins were put on the back burner as Matt Kingry put together his best tournament score ever. Matt shot a 40 on the front 9 and followed that up with a 38 on the back to secure a 78 on the scorecard. As mentioned, this is Matt’s career tournament best. He easily won the C flight by 6 strokes of second place finisher David Mays (who has been playing very well as of late). Coming in third was Joe Lee with an 86. Congratulations Matt on the great round. Matt also won a skin and the closest to the pin for a nice big payday.
The D flight saw five players competing today. And the close battle was very evident in this group with only 4 strokes separating first from fifth. But in the end it was Michael Miller taking home the top spot for the second time this year. Cowboy finishes second by only one stroke.
Congratulations to all the players that competed today and won. We hope to see everyone at the next event. With the season winding down each tournament is important.
