Jeff Wong, Steve Evans, JC Mora, Kevin Lepage, and Wayne Enzor all won the 21st Annual Southern Icebreaker hosted by Robert Trent Jones & Harbour Town Golf Links!
The Southern Icebreaker Regional brought members from 34 of our local Tours across the country to Hilton Head, South Carolina for the first tournament of the year. Palmetto Dunes Plantation (Robert Trent Jones) and Sea Pines Resort (Harbour Town Golf Links) hosted 128 Golfweek Amateur Tour members in the largest field ever in the event’s history! The start of the 2024 season marks both the 21st year of the Southern Icebreaker and opening weekend of the 30th anniversary of the Golfweek Amateur Tour.
In the Championship Flight, Jeff Wong (Hilton Head/Savannah) led wire to wire to capture the victory for the third straight year at this event with scores of 71-75-146. Jay Barnes (Charlotte) pushed Wong all day. After Barnes’ birdie at the par five 15th hole, the two were tied. On the signature lighthouse hole on 18, Wong sealed the victory with a solid par and Jay Barnes finished in solo second with 150. Two Charlotte players, Joe Jaspers, the reigning National Champion, and Jim Aughtry tied for third place at 156. Chris Weinfurt (Milwaukee) played well in his first-ever tour event and earned fifth place with a two-day total of 157.
In the A Flight, Steve Evans (Hilton Head/Savannah) and Joey Side (Atlanta) were tied at 160 after 36 holes. In the sudden-death playoff Evans was victorious with a par on the first playoff hole. Eric Maland (Charleston) was solo third at 166 followed by John Dobbins (Hilton Head/Savannah) at 169 and Jon Lyles (Hilton Head/Savannah) at 170.
In the B Flight, JC Mora (Hilton Head/Savannah) claimed the victory by three strokes with rounds of 84-85-169. Doug Burford (Hilton Head/Savannah) and Brian Harden (Tidewater) finished tied second at 171. Jeff Meyers (Cleveland/Akron) and Bob Santee (Upstate) also tied in fourth place at 173.
In the C Flight, Kevin Lepage (Charlotte) lead the entire day with a two-day score of 83-93-174 total for the victory. Scott Holland (Augusta) fished in second place with a two-day total of ?? followed by John Page (Charlotte) in third place with 183. Terry Lawson (South FL) and Robbie Burgess (Upstate) tied for fourth with two-day scores of 184.
In the D Flight, Wayne Enzor (Tidewater) won the crystal by posting a two-day total of 184. Sam Stewart (Eastern NC) was solo second at 195 followed by Ken Hansley (Eastern NC) and Tom Wendell (Hilton Head/Savannah) both with two-day scores of 197. Rounding out the top five places were Aaron Masterson (Hilton Head/Savannah) and Joe Peny (Hilton Head/Savannah) tied at 199.
