Joe Jaspers, Drew Smith, Fred Blaylock, David Cline and Gary Holzapfel all win at the IceBreaker Regional hosted at Robert Trent Jones & Harbour Town Golf Links!
Hilton Head Island, SC – This year’s IceBreaker Regional was played in Palmetto Dunes Plantation (Robert Trent Jones) and Sea Pines Resort (Harbour Town Golf Links). In the 17th year this regional tournament this was the second largest field ever with 127 players from over 23 different tour cities across the country. This marks the kick off to the 26th anniversary of the Golfweek Amateur Tour!
In the Championship Flight, Joe Jaspers from the Charlotte Tour led wire to wire for the victory with 71-77-148. The win was not that easy as Terry Lanning from the Hilton Head/Savannah Tour tied it up after the par five fifteenth. Terry Lanning finished in second one shot back with a score of 75-74-149. Jim Aughtry (Charlotte) finished in third with 73-77-150 and the tour’s current National Champion Jeff Wong (Hilton Head/Savannah) was fourth at 153. Jamie Manning (Hilton Head/Savannah) rounded out the top five scores at 155.
In the A Flight, Drew Smith of the Hilton Head/Savannah tour won by just one shot with rounds of 77-75-152. Donnie Pritt (Eastern NC) finished solo second with 79-74-153. Scott Kennedy (Myrtle Beach/Wilmington) and day one leader finished third at 160. Troy Slate (Atlanta) and Andres Lopez both tied at 162 with Slate cashing fourth in the playoff. Scott Ide (Charlotte) edged into the money at 163.
In the B Flight, Fred Blaylock (Upstate) won by four shots for the victory at 162. Billy Gamblin (Charleston) finished second at 166 followed by David Quattlebaum (Charlotte) third at 167. Joseph Holzapfel (Metro NY) was fourth at 168 followed by Boyd Laughlin (Hilton Head/Savannah) and Jeff Chalk (Jacksonville) at 169.
In the C Flight, David Cline (Charlotte) and Dave Schrott (Jacksonville) were the only flight to go into a sudden death playoff tied at 174. The first playoff hole saw two pars but Cline won on the next hole with another par to Schrott’s bogie. James Ravenel (Charleston) was third at 175 followed by Ernie DeBruler (Kansas) fourth at 176 and Chris Huge (Charleston) finished fifth at 178.
In the D Flight, Gary Holzapfel (Metro NY) won by one shot with 192. Aaron Chase (Charleston) was second at 193 followed by Colin Dooley (St. Louis) John Davis (Myrtle Beach) and Hilton Head’s own Paul Baker at 194.
