The Charleston and Hilton Head/Savannah Divisions of THE EGolf AMATEUR TOUR held their second combo event of the 2008 season on Saturday, April 12 at the Santee National Golf Club in Santee, SC just off I-95. Santee is a very popular golf destination for both residents and many visitors to South Carolina. The course layout is both challenging and playable for golfers of various skill levels. The greens are still a little bumpy as they heal from the winter, but aggressive putters will do well. The course staff as always did a great job hosting our tournament and is looking forward to our return next year. Once again, the weather had a huge influence on the tournament, as the wind was relentless, swirling and at times very brutal. The rain came twice, but was light and passed through quickly. The tournament played in 4 ½ hours and the players had a great time. The special trophies for this event were beautiful and everyone wanted one, but earning the crystal proved to be a task, as every flight except Champ was hotly contested.
Iain Hall of Charlotte, NC, who visits our coastal tours regularly, scored another win in the Championship Flight with a spectacular round of 69. Mark Ducker from Hilton Head finished second at 76 with Dominic Lizarraga of Mt. Pleasant, SC just behind at78. Kevin Arnold of Hilton Head scored a 79 for fourth place.
“A†Flight winner, John Shores of Summerville shot a nice round of 77, and then waited out the field for the win. James Kelly from Bluffton, SC took second place with an 80, just ahead of Mike Peters of Richmond Hills, GA who finished at 81.
Tom Cheves from Lexington, NC captured the Senior “A†Flight with a score of 83.
Michael Hinson an interloper from Columbia, SC galloped in with a 77 to ride off with the win in the “B†Flight. Tim Sumption of Summerville captured the second spot in a scorecard play-off over Jim Hestikind also of Columbia. Both players finished regulation with scores of 79.
Jack Willis of Hilton Head shot an 81 to hang onto the “B†Flight Senior trophy.
Mike Tucker of Bluffton shot 85 in the last “C†flight group to prevent a three way play-off for the trophy. Todd Saylor from Pooler, GA finished second over Michael Craig of John’s Island, SC and Ron Payne of Myrtle Beach, SC in a scorecard play-off.
Mike’s 85 was also good enough to hang onto the win in “C†Flight Senior Flight.
Thomas Haddad of West Columbia, SC took the “D†Flight win with a score of 86. Pat Sullivan also from Columbia finished second with an 87 with Tommy Bryant from Mt. Pleasant, SC in third.
Olin Williams from Hilton Head captured another “D†Flight Senior crown with a 94.
