The Charleston & Hilton Head-Savannah Golf Week Amateur Tours held a combo event at the Links at Stono Ferry on Sep 17th and the course was in great shape for this last major of the season. The weather was ideal and the scores indicated just how tough the course was playing with slick greens and some very tough bermuda rough.
The Championship flight saw Chris Burnett from Hilton Head out-distance David Politi and Matt McInnis by shooting a very stead 79 that included a nice iron shot on the par 3 11th hole that also netted Chris the closest to the pin for the champ flight. Congratulations Chris.
The A flight saw the low round of the day as Eric Tobias continued his great play of late by firing a 74 that included three birdies. Coming in second with a very nice 79 was Mark Ducker.
The B Flight was won by Tim Sumption with a pretty steady 82 followed by Pat Helm who seems to have the B flight in Hilton Head-Savannah tour just about sewn up! The B flight in Charleston got very tight as 50 points now separate first and second. Jerry mast continued his solid iron play by taking the CTP on hole 14 and sinking the putt for a super skin/skin.
The C flight saw the second tour director of the day win as the Ohio transplant and Hilton Head-Savannah tour Director Keith Weave secured his first Major championship of the year....and yes there were actually other people in the flight this time! David Mays continued to increase his lead in the Charleston Tour as he placed second in a scorecard playoff over Rich Cairns. Chris Hill won the closest to the pin, way to go Keith and Chris.
The D flight witnessed two very nice rounds of 95 by Max Velasquez and Dennis Harris. This was settled the old fashio way as Max won the big trophy with a playoff victory on the first hole.
Congratulations to all and remember it is a short turn-around as we play Dunes West to wrap up the year next SUNDAY. Please sign up early.
