It was a beautiful day for golf, the skies opened and let the sunshine through. We had some awesome matchups, including four of the flights went to a playoff hole to determine the winner. With a whole bunch of birdies and eagles and the four playoffs, it was an epic day on the golf course.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the event and big thanks to everyone at Annbriar GC. The members were stoked to have you back on the schedule for the 2023 season. Your staff was awesome and we truly appreciate the hospitality.
Justin Robinson
Following his impressive debut victory, Justin Robinson set his sights on a back-to-back win as he made his way to Annbriar GC. Matching him stroke for stroke on the front nine was James Sullivan, who managed to secure four pars, a birdie, and an incredible eagle, thereby equaling Robinson's score of even par 36. Robinson, starting with four consecutive pars, went on to drop two birdies, concluding the front nine with an even par 36. Although Robinson was able to make four pars and a birdie on the back nine, his final score was an 82, leaving the door open for his competitors. Sullivan also had some difficult holes on the back nine but managed to secure two pars and a birdie, shooting a total score of 82. Down the stretch, last year's points winner, Chris Pestka, battled his way back to the top with four pars and two birdies, shooting a total score of 82 and forcing a three-way tie. The trio headed to the par three 7th hole to determine the winner. Both Pestka and Sullivan hit the green with their tee shots, while Robinson landed short of the green. In a moment of dramatic flair, Robinson managed to chip in the 25-yard chip shot, that secured the victory - his second win in as many tries on the Golfweek Amateur Tour. The battle between the contestants was commendable, and Robinson's victory was a sweet one, setting the stage for an exciting sequel. Congratulations to Justin Robinson on his impressive win.
Keith Bullock
Keith commenced his round at Annbriar with a fierce determination, exemplified by his three consecutive pars and his impressive performance on the front nine's par fives. On those par fives, he scored a birdie and an eagle, bringing his total to 37 strokes as he made the turn, a mere one stroke behind the lead. Meanwhile, Mike Petty, participating in only his second Golfweek Am Tour event, exhibited impressive consistency, securing seven pars and a birdie on nine. That gave him a share of the lead with Doug Godier with a score of 36 as they made the turn. During the back nine, Petty continued his battle and added three more pars, finishing with a total score of 78 after shooting 42 on the second nine. Ultimately, Keith's dominance proved too much for the A-flight members, as he maintained his composure, carding five more pars on the back nine, and concluding with a score of 77, narrowly beating Mike Petty by just one stroke. Congratulations to both players for their admirable performances, and a special shout out to Keith on his triumphant win, marking his third career victory on the Golfweek Amateur tour. Well done, Keith.
Steve Diver
In his inaugural attempt, first-year member Steve Diver displayed unwavering determination in his pursuit of victory at the golf event. He made five pars on the front nine, positioning himself well making the turn at 41, just a stroke behind the lead. Tour veteran, Chris Poetz, began his round strong as well, delivering three pars and a birdie on the front to make the turn at 41 with a one-stroke advantage.
As the back nine unfolded, both contenders maintained a back-and-forth exchange. Poetz kept his game steady, tallying an additional four pars and finishing the round with a 43 on the back for a total score of 84. Similarly, Steve demonstrated consistent play by securing four pars on the back nine, thereby reaching the clubhouse with a tied score of 84.
Thus, a playoff ensued, taking place once again on the par 3 seventh. With the golf course teeming with onlookers, both players made pars, necessitating a putt-off. Poetz began the shootout, but his 40-foot putt left a little something to be desired, ultimately settling him 7 feet from the pin. Next up was Steve, who unleashed a fantastic putt, leaving the ball a mere four feet from the hole, thereby clinching his first-ever victory on the Golfweek Amateur tour on his first attempt.
What a great way to start your Golfweek Am Tour career. Congratulations, Steve, on your first win on tour, and welcome to the winners' circle.
Jeff Schmidt
Jeff Schmidt began his golf round with a scorching start, recording pars on the first two holes and adding two birdies on holes five and seven. This put him in an advantageous position, with a 40 and a two-stroke lead going into the back nine. However, Kevin Reed, a contender aiming for his second win of the year, was also on his game. Reed secured three pars and a significant birdie on the ninth hole, bringing his total to 42 and putting him just two strokes behind Schmidt at the turn.
On the back nine, Reed maintained his momentum and carded six pars, including three in a row on holes 16, 17, and 18, to finish with a back nine score of 43 and a total of 85. Schmidt, on the other hand, encountered some difficulties but managed to battle through and earn three more pars on the back, finishing with a 45 and a total of 85 as well. As a result, a playoff was required for the third time that day, with the first hole being the deciding factor.
Schmidt began the playoff and unleashed a powerful drive down the middle, setting the tone for the rest of the hole. Reed's drive, on the other hand, veered to the right, leaving him at a slight disadvantage. Schmidt followed up with an excellent wedge shot to just 5 feet from the pin, where he proceeded to sink the birdie putt, defeating Reed. It was a well-fought battle, and this marked Schmidt's fifth career victory on the Golfweek Amateur Tour. Kudos to you, Jeff, for your impressive performance!
Charlie Bieser
The final flight of the day witnessed a thrilling conclusion, with Charlie Bieser vying for his second consecutive tournament win, and newcomers Byron Billups and Ryan Makurat posing a challenge. Bieser had a solid start with a pair of pars and maintained consistency by avoiding any scores worse than bogey, finishing the front nine with a score of 44 and a one-stroke lead. Makurat managed to score a par and some well-executed bogeys to make the turn at 47. Meanwhile Billups, starting off with two consecutive pars, he weaved through the front nine, finishing with a score of 49, five strokes off the lead.
Moving on to the back nine, Byron rallied with a remarkable chip-in birdie on the eleventh hole, which pushed him up the leaderboard, ultimately finishing with a score of 45 on the back for a total of 94. Makurat also made a valiant effort to add three more pars on the back to come in with a 47, for a total of 94 also.
Charlie Bieser played steadily enough on the back nine to finish with a score of 50, resulting in a total of 94 and a three-way tie for the lead. The playoff was then initiated, and after all three tee shots, Bieser held the upper hand, being the only one to find the fairway with his tee shot. Capitalizing on his advantage, Bieser expertly hit the green on his second shot, followed by a two-putt for par, thus winning the golf tournament. With this victory, Bieser secures his fifth career win on the Golfweek Amateur Tour, and the second playoff win of the season. Well done, gentlemen, and congratulations to Charlie on his remarkable performance.
